Going home...maybe…

Today, the doctor walked into the room and announced that he plans to send us home tomorrow! They have already tried to send us home several times, and each time Liam has gotten a fever that has kept him in the hospital longer. Please pray that he doesn’t get a fever or have any other complications tonight! We are longing to be home together as a family.

Liam has had an especially difficult week. He was very ill with MRSA and lost a lot of the strength that he had built up after his previous infection. They had to remove his PICC line because of the MRSA, which meant that he had to endure lots of pokes from peripheral IVs and blood draws. He was absolutely miserable. Every time we would Facetime with the siblings at home, he would cry because he missed them and home so much. It’s been almost three months in the hospital, and he is over it.

Thankfully, the MRSA infection has gotten better and Liam hasn’t had any new fevers. His blood counts have begun to rise, which means that his immune system is returning. The doctors placed a new PICC line today, which is wonderful. Liam will have surgery to get a port in the next couple of weeks. Please pray that he continues to get better before then and that he could get a little break from all of this suffering.

Going home will be simultaneously wonderful and challenging. Because Liam has so many infections, we have to be his nurses at home. They are sending us home with two different IV pumps and a pump for the feeding tube formula. We will be administering at least six different medications, and there is a lot of technical care involved to prevent contamination, air bubbles, clogging, etc. They’ve trained us to do all of these things, but it’s a little scary doing it on our own. Please pray that we would get into a good rhythm and that we would become more comfortable doing these things.

Please also pray that Liam would be comfortable at home. He is very weak at the moment, and we can imagine that he might get frustrated that his body can’t do what it used to. They are sending us home with a walker to help with mobility. As many of you know, Liam has a very active three-year-old little brother, and we are nervous that he will accidentally be too rough with Liam or knock him down. Please pray that they can play together peacefully.

Thank you so much for praying for us and our sweet boy. We will let you know tomorrow if we made it home!
