Sentimental sighs filled the room, as the bystanders witnessed an ill child comforting his mother. As I began to weep, Liam took my hand in his and held it. Then he handed me a tissue to wipe my tears.
He is such a sweet kindhearted little boy, one who puts others wants and needs before his own. Even while in the hospital, he’s been setting aside several of his new toys to give to his siblings, claiming that he knows Lily or Jack would love this or that.
And today, as the doctor delivered more disappointing news, Liam thought only of consoling me. It is such a privilege to be his mama, and to get to walk through this trial with him and witness his gentle strength.
Today the doctor informed us that Liam will likely be in the hospital for at least another month. He has a fungal infection in his liver and spleen, which has caused the growth of micro abscesses. His body is trying to fight these infections, which is why his ANC counts have continued to be low. His bone marrow hasn’t had a chance to recover.
This presents several problems. Liam cannot begin Phase 2 of treatment with a low ANC account. He has to have some improvement, but the fungus is slowing him down. Obviously, the longer his body takes to prepare for Phase 2, the higher the chances of relapse. There is also concern that the fungus could spread to other organs. It’s a waiting game to see what his body will do.
Currently, he is undergoing anti-fungal treatment which will last for several months on top of chemotherapy. Whenever Liam’s ANC count recovers (ideally next week), they will begin Phase 2 chemo using his PICC line. The plan is to keep him in the hospital for at least the first month of Phase 2, and then insert his port before he begins the rest of Phase 2. It’s not safe for him to have surgery now with an active fungal infection, and they need to monitor him closely until things have stabilized.
All things considering, Liam is generally pretty happy. He is still in isolation because of his cough, so he isn’t allowed to leave the room, which limits our activities. He’s also in and out of fevers. But we are taking advantage of every good moment to be active and play within the confines of our hospital room. Once a day, they let us take a quick walk outside, which is lovely!
Please continue to pray for Liam. Pray for his healing and for God’s comfort and peace to cover us. Our hearts are heavy in light of recent events. We are living hour to hour, but cherishing every sweet moment with our little boy.
