Six Weeks In

We’ve been in the hospital for six weeks now. Liam has continued to experience fevers and feel pretty sick. He is sleeping a lot, eating very little, and he is generally pretty tired. The doctors are still running tests, and a lot of things are still up in the air. Here is what we know:

Liam’s ANC count is still very high. Now that his numbers have gone up, his body sees the infection and is working really hard to attack it. That is most likely why he feels so terrible.

Liam’s second CT scan showed that the infection on his liver and spleen has not spread to other organs.

However, a blood culture from yesterday grew some bacteria. It is possible that the fevers and abscesses are not fungal, but from a different sort of infection. It is also possible that this vial of blood was contaminated, as none of his other blood cultures afterward have grown any bacteria yet. If they grow bacteria by tomorrow, we will know we have a different or an additional infection on our hands.

The infectious disease doctor told me that they will have more information in the next few days as they determine if the infection is fungal or bacterial. They are still unsure of which medications to use long term if the infection is fungal. Please pray that the Lord gives them wisdom and clear answers for treatment.

Liam will begin Phase 2 of chemotherapy treatment on Monday, July 15. They delayed treatment and gave his body one week off so that his immune system could have a chance to fight this infection. Next week, because of chemo, his immune system will die again, and he’ll be relying only on medications to fight for him.

Thank you so much for praying for our son. Please continue to pray for his healing, and for strength for our family.

Continuing to pray for the infections to resolve and for strength for you all— six weeks is a long time and I know being in the hospital probably makes it feel even longer— praying his body with help can get this infection under control, so he can move ahead in the new phase of treatment as ready as possible— praying God’s mercy and faithfulness continue to cover you each day by day—sending so much love— wish we could give each of you a big hug. —Tara (and the Gillaspie Fam)
